The airline industry is facing a hiring disaster, with only about half of the companies that were planning to hire employees this year having hired enough people, according to a new report from the Employment Development Department.
The report, released Thursday, said that for the second quarter, only 20 percent of employers were hiring workers, down from 29 percent last year.
The numbers are worse for new hires, who are projected to be more than half of employers this year.
For the third quarter, the numbers are down more than 40 percent, from 33 percent last month to 23 percent.
The report also said the unemployment rate is up about 5.5 percentage points from a year ago.
The labor force participation rate is also up, from 67.7 percent to 69.1 percent.For more:
